US cargo operator FedEx is ordering up to 50 frames of a newly designated ATR freighter model based on the company's successful ATR 72-600 turboprop.

ATR is to develop the 72-600F, fitted with a large cargo door in the forward fuselage as well as a cargo door in the rear, for entry into service in 2020.

The FedEx order comprises 30 firm frames plus options for another 20.

"These aircraft will be the first new ATRs to be directly delivered from the factory in a freighter configuration," says the manufacturer.

ATR says the 72-600F will feature a Class E freight cabin and will be able to accommodate bulk cargo, pallets, or up to seven unit load containers.

Really good question. I suspect more for EU ops, but there could be some designated for North America.

I need to look into this.
