Okay, how did this happen?

A Eurowings Airbus A320 departed Duddeldorf bound for Olbia, Italy. During the descent, the crew was informed that their destination airport was closed to commercial traffic.

The aircraft entered a holding pattern northeast of Sardinia for approximately 35 minutes while ATC  and Eurowings operations discussed the situation. The A320, registered D-AEWJ, climbed to Thirty-five thousand feet and returned to Dusseldorf some four hours after departure.

Oh, Lordy! [rolleyes]

The entire world has lost its mind. One of two things happens in a crisis. Leaders rise to the occasion. Most of the others panic and make piss-poor decisions.
