Welcome to yet another amazing adventure at Evie Air Base. This will unfortunately be the last Evie production before the base receives a refit and buildings including the famous control tower get demolished and make way for several new structures and an overall new look. In the meantime join me on this latest SUPERMODELNATION production. As usual, I'm not sure where this story will go or how it will be received. It covers a slightly sensitive but very realistic experience in modern day aviation. I hope you follow the story with interest.

As today marks the start of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow UK, this story coincides with that event and provides a different historical perspective.

It should be noted that all Characters, scenes and storylines appearing in this work are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, diorama figures, living, dead or plastic is purely coincidental.

The scene is set in the past. At this time Michael Jackson was still alive, Saddam Hussain was still very much in power and the tragedy that was Sept 11th was just a year ago. The year is 2002. It is the year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee and the year the Commonwealth Games was scheduled to be held in Manchester. Arrangements were underway and the opening ceremony was planned for 25th July and promised to be a grand event. However events threatened to jeopardise all the hard work and planning that had gone before. It seemed like just another ordinary morning...

Morning news on the TV was breaking

We're just receiving breaking news across the wires of what appears to be a commercial airline that has reportedly diverted from its scheduled flight path...At this stage we are unclear which type of jet it is or which airline. All we currently have is confirmed reports of a passenger plane that has deviated from its planned route and it appears not to be responded to Air Traffic Control contact...Stay tuned as we receive more information

We clearly have a situation that is still developing...more to follow after the commercial break...

[FLASHBACK] 6 MONTHS PREVIOUSLY

Buckingham Palace, London, Home of British Royalty.

Two vehicles en-route to the Palace with a very important delegation

The delegates were members of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.

They were summoned by Her Majesty who had a very specific request for what she considered to be a special Commonwealth games planned for July.

The delegates comprised of Sponsors of the 2002 Commonwealth Games including Manchester Airports Group (MAG); Boeing and of course the CEO of SUPERMODELNATION.

The contingent did not know what to expect or what they would be asked

The cars pulled up in front and the high powered delegation were ushered into the palace

Once inside and after introductions Her Majesty had several requests on how she wanted the Games to be staged and what she wanted to see. One of such demands was for a Commemorative aircraft that would herald the start of the games and be used in the opening ceremony to fly alongside the Royal Air Force red arrows.

The Boeing representatives were excited of the prospect of showcasing their modern 757 aircraft or possibly the Queen would request their new next generation 737-800 which would be a boost to orders being received from carriers at the time. They waited in anticipation to learn the model to herald in the Games

Her Majesty said she wanted her favourite aircraft, one she had traversed the globe on her numerous Commonwealth state visits and one that reflected the golden age of aviation when the Commonwealth was at its peak. She requested for the Boeing 707. It should be painted bright, vibrant and bold. it should make a statement and reflect the spirit of the Commonwealth Games. Boeing representatives scratched their heads slightly confused but none dared speak a contrary word. The Queen wanted a 707. By heck the Queen would have a 707

[FAST FORWARD- 22nd July]

We now have further reports that the plane is a private Charter  aircraft owned by SUPERMODELNATION renowned aviation sponsors. We still have no information on the planes intended destination or its passengers. All we do know is the plane is not on its course. In this heightened period of aviation security following last year's atrocities authorities are increasingly concerned with the lack of contact with the plane.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Air Traffic Control at Anglesey (HLY) were first to notice the deviation of Flight CWG 003 on radar, inbound from Vancouver International (YVR) to Manchester Airport (MAN).

Air Traffic Controllers at the small Anglesey airport were desperately trying to establish radio contact with the plane.

The aircraft transponder remained on and altitude remained unchanged but no communication was received.

Controllers knew they had a serious situation on their hands and with 9/11 only being a year ago, and fresh in their minds, they initiated the UK's new aviation regulations.

Radar stations At Boulmer and Scampton in Lincolnshire on receiving the alerts pass these onto the RAFs National Air & Space Operations Centre in High Wycombe (the UKs equivalent to NORAD). RAF Quick Reaction Alert Bases (RAF Leuchars in Fife and RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire as well as Cornwall) are then mobilised.

But in this case the plane was confirmed to be a special designation Charter with very important foreign dignitaries aboard. And that altered the Alert response chain

Meanwhile ATC confirmed the new flight path lined the aircraft up with the Wylfa Nuclear Power Plant and other major UK cities in the South-East including London

In such rare circumstances involving foreign VIPs the only UK Quick Reaction Alert base permissible for use was NATO's Evie Air Base

Evie ATC took the call. The Intercept scramble alarm was sounded.

The base always had a minimum of two jets primed for this eventuality and they trained for it regularly

Fortunately and on this occasion they had two U.S. Air Force (NATO) General Dynamic (now Lockheed Martin) F-16s in the main hanger

The F-16 pilots wasted no time

The first was the F-16C variant, U.S.A.F. 23rd Fighter Squadron of the 52nd Fighter Wing Operations Group

Close behind was the F-16D variant, U.S.A.F. 510th Fighter Squadron of the 31st Fighter Wing Operations Group

[Editor's Note: As you can see the old Telecoms Headquarters Building once stood on the grounds beside the base back in 2002 before it was pulled down for the new Hangar we have today [wink]]

Both jets were immediately cleared for the runway

The Pilots knew if the order came they may have to shoot down a civilian aircraft.

But this was what they trained for. This was the job.

One and Two cleared for Take-off

Both jets are airborne 6 minutes from Base Alert

Meanwhile on the TV's mid morning News

Reports are still coming in and are sketchy but we can now confirm the commercial plane reported to deviate from its scheduled flight path is Flight CWG 003 a Privately owned Commemorative Charter plane commissioned by Her Majesty the Queen to herald in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. The plane we believe was coming in from Vancouver International with high level representatives of the Commonwealth Games Family Members and some Athletes. We also believe, but this is currently unconfirmed, that the Canadian Deputy Prime Minister together with the Prime Minister of New Zealand who was in Canada on a State visit and en route to the UK for the Games are also aboard. We are trying to confirm  these reports as this news is breaking...please stay tuned.

Inbound over UK territorial waters, a 707 bearing the 2002 Commonwealth Games logo continued

The Game's Mascot clearly emblazoned on its tail

Still no radio contact...No communications...Nothing...

The two F-16s which formed part of the UK's Quick Response Aircraft (QRA) opened up full afterburners to close the distance. They were airborne for around 8 minutes and had picked up the rogue jet on radar

They closed in on the 707 and waited to establish visual contact.

After a few more minutes. They radioed in to Evie to confirm
"Tower...Approaching target 8.5 miles east of Evie...Radar contact established...Zero visual...Altitude 295...Intercept 463"

At Evie the jets were being monitored on radar. The suspect airliner's location, height and air speed, the potential flight trajectory, remaining duration of flight and range were all being closely observed.
"Roger Intercept 463, we have you at 295"

Visual was finally established as the F-16s closed in
"Tower we have visual...Inctercept 463"

"Copy that Intercept 463"

"Ident One...Civilian Boeing 707 bearing London 1-2-0...23 miles...At 195...Heading 130...Intercept 463"

"Roger Intercept 463...Target Squaking 7500...Confirmed...Attempt radio com...Emergency 121.5"

"Copy Tower...Target Squak ident 7500...Attempt Radio Com...Emergency 121.5...Intercept 463"

"463 Readback is correct"

The lead F-16 pilot switched his radio to emergency frequency 121.5MHz to make contact with the Boeing which remained on course with no change to speed or altitude
"Boeing 707...Call Sign Charlie-Whisky-Golf 003...Heading 130...Squaking 7500...At 195...This is Qubec-Romeo-Alpha Intercept 463...NATO Forces mid-flight interception...Turn heading 280 over"

"...Attention Boeing 707...Call Sign Charlie-Whisky-Golf 003...Turn heading 280 at Flight Level 170...You have been intercepted...Acknowledge..."

With no radio or visual acknowledgement received from the airliner the F-16s commenced intercept manoeuvres

They descended quickly to just above the Boeing's flight level

The jets flanked the airliner to the rear and slightly above then they started to drop height slowly

Once level the lead Interceptor started to edge forward

Standard interception manoeuvres would require a Port side approach but due to prevailing meteorological conditions a Starboard (right hand) approach was adopted

"Tower...Ident Two...Alpha-Alpha-Three-Two-Niner-Zero-Eight...Commonwealth Games Charter...Boeing 707...Heading 280...At FL195 confirmed"

"Copy 463"

The Pilot edged ahead and rocked his wings to signify an Intercept. No response

Proceeding to the second phase of Interception the pilot started to slowly edge the F-16 towards the airliner. Lowering landing gears to signify a required landing. Still no response

The Boeing remained on course with no contact, no movement and no response. The F-16s edged closer

Authorities knew that with the plane squaking the Emergency SSR Code 7500 this was certain to be a Hijack. Being on course for various Critical National Infrastructure(CNI) including the city of London they knew they had to act quickly and could take no chances.

Cheers guys. Appreciate the feedback. Never sure how my work is being received. Sometimes wish I could progress scenes faster if time permitted. I am enjoying these scenes particularly though. More to follow soon.
