On This Day In Aviation History - 26 June 1988

A chartered Airbus A320-111 operating as Air France 296 crashed while making a low pass over Mulhouse–Habsheim Airport in France.

Of the 130 passengers and six crew on board, three were killed with 50 injured. The official cause of the crash was determined to be pilot error.

The TV series Mayday claimed in an episode that the flight recorder might have been tampered with. Further, the Institute of Police Forensic Evidence and Criminology in Lausanne, Switzerland claim that the flight data recorders might have been switched and were not those on board flight 296 when it crashed. Airbus vehemently denies this claim and issued a rebuttal to the contrary in 1991.
