Operation Undertow

The Middle East has often been referred to as a powder keg waiting to be lit. Iran was now holding the match. Just hours ago, Iran launched one-dozen medium-range ballistic missiles toward Israel.

Eleven of the twelve were brought down by the Jewish State’s Iron Dome missile defense system. The twelfth missile fell short of its intended target but managed to cause chaos and destruction, nonetheless.

Number twelve had killed forty-seven in Jordan and injured a further eighty-two. The United States and its NATO allies decided swift action would be advisable. Both Israel and Jordan promised their full support and cooperation. Saudi Arabia was reticent to get involved, despite the unauthorized Iranian overflight of their airspace.

Iran was threatening total war if any retaliation were to occur. Despite the threat, the United States, Israel, and Jordan fully intended to retaliate. Russia was urging caution, as was China, but secretly both knew that the situation in Iran was destabilizing. The citizens of Iran were in the midst of an uprising, so the government needed to act. They decided that picking a fight with Israel, and by default, the United States to be the best course of action. This foolhardy decision was about to blow over into full-scale war.

The US Navy’s newest aircraft carrier sailed past the Strait of Gibraltar on its way to the Arabian Sea. The USS Audacious, the second of the Illustrious-class aircraft carrier family, would be the spearhead of the US response to Iran’s aggression. The early stages of Operation Undertow were well underway.

Petty Officer First Class Nate Wallace stepped onto the flight deck of the USS Audacious. The Blue Shirt was responsible for aircraft handling and towing. His day, like all the other Skittles assigned to the Audacious, was going to be a busy one.

Just to his right was Petty Officer Third Class Peter Ruiz. Petty Officer Ruiz was a Brown Shirt, responsible for aircraft maintenance. “Petty Officer Wallace, Commander Kazansky is up first. His aircraft is ready.”

“Right,” replied Petty Officer Wallace. The Blue Shirt then activated his headset. “Petty Officer Green, Iceman is up. Let’s get his aircraft ready to tow.”

“Have you seen the spec-ops guys in the mess hall this morning?” asked Ruiz.

“Sure did.” Petty Officer Wallace continued. “The scuttlebutt is that they aren’t all SEALS. Troy said that some of them are CIA.”

“Really?” Petty Officer Ruiz thought a moment. “I bet those guys know all kinds of dirty little secrets.”

      “Yep,” replied Wallace.

For the story, yes. [biggrin] Although, it would make a fitting name for a new class of super-carriers in real life. [thumb]

Thank you, sir.

More to follow. Including a visit from a rather notable fighter pilot.
