Royal Air Maroc has signed with Boeing for four Boeing 787-9s, in a deal valued at $1.1 billion at list prices.

The orders include two 787s purchased in December 2016 and two purchased this month, says Boeing. They were previously listed as unidentified on the manufacturer's orders and delivery website.

No engine selection was disclosed, but the carrier's five in-service 787-8s are powered by General Electric GEnx engines. Boeing also did not state when the -9s are scheduled to be delivered.

The Moroccan carrier uses its -8s on international routes from Casablanca to North America, South America, the Middle East and Europe. It plans to use the incoming -9s to expand services to these areas.

"Our vision is to be the leading airline in Africa in terms of quality of service, quality of planes and connectivity. Ordering new-generation planes such as the Dreamliner puts our airline on the right track to fulfill our vision," says Abdelhamid Addou, chief executive and chairman of Royal Air Maroc.
