Virgin Atlantic has announced that up to a third of its workforce (3,150 employees) will be cut from the company. The venerable Boeing 747-400 will also be withdrawn from the fleet to reshape the airline for the future.

Additionally, the airline will move out of Gatwick Airport in an effort to further reduce costs.

had read that he is trying to SELL virgin Atlantic. and has given it till end of May. he is also moving out of Gatwick. but keeping his slots. then again, B.A are also cutting jobs. other airlines are doing likewise and retiring loads of older aircraft.

The thought of never seeing a 747-400 in the lovely colors of Virgin Atlantic again is very sobering for me. All those jobs lost, my God. Damn the Chinese government for this.

I would like to think a buyer can be found, but with the current state of affairs in the airline industry, I just don't know. I sincerely hope we don't lose the entire airline. It would be harmful not only to English aviation but for all of us.

This might require government intervention. We're talking about jobs here, folks. I am always resistant to government intervention, but this is a whole different ball game.
